CHAPTER SIX
1
It must have been close to dawn when the long last footsteps became audibleânot the tread of one man but of two! Was he about to hit the jackpot?
He did.
Ramos and the goon entered together, the small rat and the big one. Ramos smirked and waved a finger at North. âAh, Colonel, I understand that you have not been exactly gallant with the lady from Moscow. You will soon be made to regret that.â He motioned shock-haired Luis into a corner. âSenora Soboren took great offense and has gone to inform her husband.â He giggled. âBut one wonders how she will explain the nature of her hurt.
âBut Iâll tell you something,â he went on in his squeaky voice. âI donât like her very much, either. Carajo! These Russian women, they are too much complicated in the head. What they need is a good knock every once in a while. I donât blame you.â
âAnd what would you do with such a woman, you mangy little bastard?â
The Ferretâs lips flattened. âReally, that is no way for one in your situation to talk. Why do you spoil an international reputation for graciousness and fine manners? Besides, you are not the one who should feel bitter.â
Again that odd come-on like Tanyaâs. How was he supposed to reply?
âIâll remain bitter until I even up our score.â
Ramos snorted. âYou have only won a small skirmish, Colonel, and in fact you may not even have won thatâyet. We shall see.â
Suddenly the meaning of all this struck North. They believed heâd discovered the lightning-ball machineâs site. Which meant they wanted to find out to whom, if anyone, heâd described the location!
He groaned inwardly; this misconception was likely not only to seal his doom but also ensured the failure of this missionâfor surely they would kill him if he denied knowing the location of the machine; but if he pretended to know but refused to give a name, he might at least delay the attack on the oil fields until Kelly could pick up the trail on his own.
âLook, Ramos, I may know, and I may not, so why donât you admit that this time youâre licked? Take your losses and clear out of this before the government stands you before a firing squad. This is only advice from one professional to another, you understand.â
Ramosâ sickly smile disappeared now and whatever restraint heâd shown was evaporating. Fortunately the fellow seemed convinced that he, North, had passed the word and that the destruction of Soborenâs apparatus was not only possible but imminent. Hugh watched the colorless lips go taut and sensed he might have moved just a little too fast to ensure his own future comfort.
âAll right, Tonto!â Ramos spat. âThere is no more time to be wasted. Your people will not find the machine. They will only be a nuisance in the mountains and will probably kill themselves in searching for it.
âThe storms will begin tonight, and then the derricks will begin to go. First a few on a test run.
